Laver Class Blog
Hello there and welcome to our first class blog of 2025!
This week we have welcomed a new teaching assistant to our classroom, Miss Adamson. She's brilliant, and we're really excited to work with her in year 1!
This week we have started a new story in English called 'Boa's Bad Birthday'. Before we read the story we made predictions about what might happen. Henry said "I predict he has a bad birthday because nobody comes to his party." Esther said "I predict he eats too much and is poorly because you can see funny shapes in his tummy". Turns out Boa had a bad birthday because he was given lots of presents he couldn't use... like mittens and a piano!
In Maths this week we have been learning about all the numbers from 10 - 20. It was tricky at first to remember that the numbers 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 all have 1 ten inside of them but we're really getting the hang of it now.
In PE we have started a new Gymnastics unit. We practised our jumps and rolls and worked in teams to create sequences. Esther, Isla, Reenie, Edie and Elenoa did a brilliant jump off the bench, and it was completely in sync!
This week in Art we were practising our painting skills and using different brushes to create different effects. Oliver and Tyler worked as a great team to create the most perfect shade of blue and Cheska had the fab idea of using a paper towel to create a different effect for her painting.
Finally, we launched our new Learning Means the World topic this week, Royal Patrons. We learnt the word "chronological". Edie remarked that it was very hard to say, and we all agreed so we'll keep on practising it!
We looked at the invention of the camera during Queen Victoria's reign. We learnt that before cameras, people had to sit and wait for ages to be drawn or painted. We also learnt that you had to sit for 20 seconds when having your picture taken with the earliest cameras. We tried to sit for 20 seconds, completely still. It was super tricky! Isaac said that he thinks cameras are better because you can see exactly what people look like. Thomas K said that cameras are now much quicker than drawing.
