Laver Class Blog Post

What a week it has been in Laver Class, we've celebrated pancake day, world book day and on Friday we're taking part in a football event at the Juniors!
In English, we have been continuing to explore the non fiction book 'Hidden World: Ocean'. We have event looked a good example of a non fiction text on Safari Animals. This is to inspire our own writing next week!
On World Book Day we continued with our learning of non fiction texts and even decorated our class door with the theme of our class story. Please see pictures below. The children threw themselves into all the World Book Day activties and we all had the most wonderful time!
In Maths this week we have been completing our spring assessments and have shown fantastic independent learning skills. It can be tricky to stay silent during these learning jobs, but everyone has been brilliant! It even meant we've had time for some BBC maths supermovers! In Mastering Number we have been using the rekenreks again to create a whole and describe its parts. Hollie-May spotted that four is the whole and 1, 1, 1 and 1 are its parts!
During Learning Means the World we have started a new topic called "Children's Champion" which focusses on the life and work of Thomas Barnardo. We looked at some artefacts from his medical kit as a doctor and discussed his early life.
In RE, we have focusing on the story of creation. The children showed a fantastic understanding of what the story tells us about God. Edie said "he's very busy" and we all agreed! No wonder he had to rest on the seventh day!
Finally we have been considering the events of Christian calendar this week. We celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) with some pancake races and we discussed Lent and the countdown to Easter. The children demonstrated a really good understanding of the Easter story and it's importance in the Christian calendar.
Please see below for some fabulous pictures from this week. The year 1 teams would like to thank every child for their brilliant participation in all the fun we've had this week. Well done everyone!
